Wellington Community Hub

Shop, Post Office, Parish Room and Community Library

Here are a few facts about the building:

It was newly built and opened in June 2014.

The land on which it stands is owned by Wellington Chapel and leased to Wellington Parish Council for 99 years at a ‘peppercorn’ rent. We are grateful to the Chapel for its generosity.

The building is owned by the Parish Council who raised the money to build it by taking out a 20-year loan from the Public Works Loan Board. The loan is repaid through a combination of rent from the shop-keeper and an amount added to the Parish precept (the amount of your council tax that comes back directly to the Parish Council).

The shop and Post Office are both commercial ventures and the Parish Council has no financial or management interests in the way that Wellington Delights and the Post Office are run. The current tenant is Carol Lloyd who took over the business in June 2017. The shop telephone number is 830111.
The Parish Council maintains the fabric of the building and has a ‘shop management group’ that meets regularly to ensure that all matters of on-going maintenance are dealt with adequately. The group also meets with the tenant from time to time to maintain good relations. The external grounds are also maintained by the Parish Council.

The lawned area and car park form a flood relief channel if Wellington Brook overspills its banks. The car park is surfaced in a permeable material and no structures are allowed on the grassed area other than the one small tree that was permitted as part of the planning approval. For this reason, that land cannot be used as a children’s play area!

The Parish Room is available for meetings of up to 10 people at no cost – see details on the notice board in the foyer. The room cannot be used for commercial gain. The Community Library is open there every Wednesday morning.

The Parish Council is proud to have been able to create this facility in Wellington for the benefit of its parishioners and is grateful for all the support shown during the long drawn out planning procedures. As far as we know there is no other village in Herefordshire that has been able to manage and succeed with a project like this so please continue to support the shop and Post Office in any way that you can – for some people it is an essential part of their lives but everyone needs to work together to ensure its continuity!
