Guidance for Tree Works in a Conservation Area
Wellington is one of 64 designated “Conservation Areas” in Herefordshire. These are defined areas of special architectural or historic interest and are covered by planning legislation to preserve or enhance their character or appearance. As Tree Warden I support the work of the Parish Council to ensure that our beautiful trees and hedgerows are preserved and maintained to keep Wellington’s character and appearance for us, and as a habitat for animals and birds.
So this does mean those that live within the conservation area are subject to restrictions on building and tree works. For any work to, or felling of trees, you need to give Hereford Council 6 weeks notice of this (except fruit trees which need regular maintenance and are not subject to this process.)
A tree is considered to need planning permission for height/width reduction, crown lifting or felling, when its trunk is 75mm at 1.5m from the ground.
You need to measure 5 feet or 1.5m up from the ground –
If the diameter (through the middle of the trunk) is 75mm (3 inches) or more :
Or: if in a group of trees, 100mm (4 inches) :(to allow neighbouring trees to grow), then a treeworks planning application needs to be completed.

The application process is free and help identifying tree types can be sought from the Tree Warden or tree specialists.
You will need to draw a simple plan of the site to include in your submission, a photograph is also helpful.
Once received, Herefordshire Council date stamps the form and informs the Parish Council who direct the Tree Warden to view the trees and discuss the proposals with the applicant.
